I always thought it was called the Blind Hem stitch, but have found it to be called the Ladder Stitch, Tunnel Stitch or the Mattress Stitch.  Anyhow, here is the link to a fabulous tutorial on this helpful hand sewn stitch.  Enjoy!  Quilt Taffy's Invisible Closing Stitch
